Students view the Assignment via the Canvas course site and submit their work online through text entry, file uploads, media recordings, Google Docs, URLs, or Canvas pages. This assignment appears on the Assignments Index Page, the Syllabus, and the Gradebook and User Dashboard, if the Assignment is graded.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Important Assignment settings include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The points available<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Assignment Group (especially important if you use a weighted graded system)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The grade display type (points, percent, incomplete\/complete, letter grade, GPA scale)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Submission type (text entry, URL, media recording, file uploads)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Plagiarism review (none, SimCheck by Turnitin)\u00a0<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you are using a plagiarism review tool (now SimCheck, instead of VeriCite) be sure to let students know.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Group assignment settings, if a group assignment<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Peer review\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Assign to (everyone, select students)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Due Date<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Available from, Until (if you only want students to have access between certain dates)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Assignments can be assigned to individual students, groups, or sections. Additional settings control how group assignments are graded. Canvas also can be used to assign peer reviews to encourage interactions among students.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/community.canvaslms.com\/docs\/DOC-10092-415254365\" class=\"broken_link\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Read the Canvas instructor guide to creating assignments<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to learn more.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Discussions<\/h2>\n<h3>Expectations<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Students can have discussions asynchronously using <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/community.canvaslms.com\/docs\/DOC-13016-4152724374\" class=\"broken_link\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Canvas Discussions<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. When you plan for students to take part in asynchronous discussions, it\u2019s helpful to offer <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/community.canvaslms.com\/docs\/DOC-12722-415286227\" class=\"broken_link\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">clear criteria <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and examples of strong responses. It\u2019s also a good idea to remind students about the etiquette of online conversations&#8211;it\u2019s important to think through tone when responding to classmates in discussion threads.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Settings<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are several settings that allow you to tailor Discussions for specific instructional purposes. These include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Deciding between a full group or small group discussion<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Determining whether it\u2019s graded or ungraded<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If the discussion is graded, the point value needs to be set<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Considering whether the discussion will the threaded or focused (not threaded)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Prompts<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0Discussions are most <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">engaging<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> when the prompt is relevant, authentic, and challenging. The Discussions rich content editor allows you to to embed media within prompts as well.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Quizzes<\/h2>\n<p>Canvas <a href=\"https:\/\/community.canvaslms.com\/docs\/DOC-12949-4152724265\" class=\"broken_link\">Quizzes<\/a> allow you to create both informal checks for understanding or formative assessments (practice quizzes) and higher stakes summative assessments (graded quizzes). Depending on the purpose of the Quiz, there are several <a href=\"https:\/\/community.canvaslms.com\/docs\/DOC-10152-415241475\" class=\"broken_link\">options<\/a> you can choose from. These include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Shuffle answers, to minimize academic dishonesty<\/li>\n<li>Time limit<\/li>\n<li>Allow multiple attempts<\/li>\n<li>Quiz responses, to allow students to view their responses<\/li>\n<li>Show correct answers, after completing the quiz<\/li>\n<li>Show one question at a time<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Quizzes also allow for many question types, including:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Multiple Choice<\/li>\n<li>True\/False<\/li>\n<li>Fill-in-the-Blank<\/li>\n<li>Fill-in-Multiple-Blanks<\/li>\n<li>Multiple Answers<\/li>\n<li>Multiple Drop-down (can be used for Likert scale)<\/li>\n<li>Matching<\/li>\n<li>Numerical Answer<\/li>\n<li>Formula (simple formula and single variable)<\/li>\n<li>Essay<\/li>\n<li>File Upload<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Assignments As an instructor, you can create Assignments in Canvas that students use to review requirements instructions and submit their work.
