PhD degree time to completion notes: Most students graduate from the PhD degree program in 6 years. It is possible to complete the program in fewer years when an applicant has already obtained a Masters degree or Specialist degree in School Psychology. Students who enter with a previous degree (from other schools or UW EdS students who apply to the PhD degree program) in School Psychology usually enter the program at the point of the fourth year and complete two years of coursework and  a pre-doctoral internship. Thus, students who have completed a Masters or EdS degree in School Psychology can complete the PhD degree program in 3 or 4 years.

Course Waiver Policy: For students who have not obtained a Master's degree or Educational Specialist degree in School Psychology, the program may accept one or two courses as "waived" by petitioning using a course from another graduate level program. Given the cohort design of the UW School Psychology program and the linear sequence required for classes taught specifically from a school psychology perspective, students are expected to complete all the courses in the Educational Specialist degree sequence as designed. If a student already completed a graduate level class that aligns almost identically to one of the courses being offered in the sequence, they may wish to see if that particular course could be waived. Waiving classes requires multiple steps. In order to waive a class, the student needs to obtain permission from their advisor, the instructor of the course, the area chair, and the Assistant Dean of Graduate Studies. The waiver process cannot be initiated until completion of one quarter of registration.  Students who receive course waivers are still responsible for the content of the course or courses being waived. In addition, credits for the waived course are not transferable; therefore another course must be taken “in residence” to fulfill the requirement. Credits transferred have minimal or no impact regarding time to completion for the PhD degree.
