Innovation Support Team

History & Purpose

Founded in 2016, the Innovation Support Team is the sounding board for reviewing, evaluating, and recommending strategies, plans, and policies for innovative programs associated with the College of Education. The IST does not approve new programs but is advisory to the Dean and Assistant Dean for Finance and Administration.

The specific elements of the team's charge include:

  • Identify strategic questions and areas of challenge related to executing new programs, including administrative, fiscal, human resource, marketing, participant support and learning and information technology
  • Identify opportunities where COE support services can help achieve rapid innovation in the College and streamline proposals
  • Assist innovators in the coordinated implementation of new programs and initiatives.
  • Collaborate with COE Academic Programs Committee (required only for credit-bearing academic programs)

Overview of the IST Process

  • Step 1: Gather information about your proposed innovation
  • Step 2: Submit your proposal to IST
  • Step 3: Meet with IST
  • Step 4: Refine your proposal and submit for final approval
  • Step 5: Launch your innovation

Timeline

IST team meets monthly. As such, you can expect the IST process to take at least one month to complete from initial proposal to final approval. The timeline is dependent on how complete your proposal is when you submit. Please get in touch with us sooner rather than later, especially if the launch of your innovation is time sensitive.

For academic innovations: New academic programs entail a series of steps beginning with IST. The Innovative Support Team will help prepare your proposed program for subsequent steps, including:

The Graduate School also takes a minimum of two months for its review, particularly for new programs/certificates. Undergraduate program reviews can take up to a year since there are multiple faculty bodies that review and approve the proposal along with multiple tri-campus reviews, which serves as a public hearing across the campuses. For details on the length of time for the FCAS review go to: https://registrar.washington.edu/curriculum/ugprogram-faqs/

Innovation Support Team Process

Step 1: Gather Information

If your idea is in the early stages of development and you'd like an orientation to available College services, examples of past innovations, typical costs and timelines, or other information before beginning a proposal, please contact ConnectEd.

If you are ready to start preparing your proposal, download a copy of the innovation proposal questions and use this template to gather information to the best of your ability. The information you provide will help our team offer meaningful support and guide you through the next steps. We understand that some questions may be difficult to answer at this stage — and that’s okay. Please don’t let that keep you from submitting the form and beginning the conversation. Our team will work with you to find the answers.

Please also share your idea with your Area to ensure there is no overlap with other programs and to gain the support of your Area Chair.

Step 2: Submit Your Proposal

The innovation proposal form below is designed to gather the key information needed for the IST to understand your innovation, identify the types of support your innovation may require, and to uncover opportunities to streamline the launch of your program.

Updated IST Proposal Form Link coming Fall 2025 - you can send a copy of the innovation proposal questions linked in Step 1 to ConnectEd@uw.edu if you are ready to submit your proposal before the link is ready.

Once your initial proposal is submitted, ConnectEd will review the proposal to determine what support is required

  • Innovation support (academic or non-academic): All Area Chairs and Associate Deans will receive the proposal and have an opportunity to consider mission fit and identify any redundancy with similar programs already offered through the College. Any questions generated by the Area Chairs or Deans will be forwarded to the innovator within two weeks. Once approved to move forward, ConnectEd will identify the appropriate IST Team (academic or non-academic) and schedule you for the next available meeting.
  • Professional development support: For proposed professional learning activities that do not require support from units across the College, ConnectEd will work directly with you to plan and launch your program.

Step 3: Meet with the Innovation Support Team

During the meeting, IST team members will work with you to refine your innovation, identify any additional areas to address, and help you navigate College and University systems. They will also identify next steps to support the successful launch of your idea.

Step 4: Refine Your Proposal and Submit for Final Approval

After meeting with the IST, you will follow up on the advice and next steps provided by the IST to refine your proposal. This will likely involve working with individual IST team members or College offices (eg. ConnectEd, finance, HR, OSS, tech, marketing).

Updated IST Proposal Form Link coming Fall 2025 - you can send a copy of the innovation proposal questions linked in Step 1 to ConnectEd@uw.edu if you are ready to submit your proposal before the link is ready.

For non-academic innovations: Your final proposal will be reviewed by the Associate Deans and the Assistant Dean of Finance and Operations to ensure any fiscal, human resource and risk management aspects have been fully addressed and then sent to the Dean for final approval.

For academic innovations: Your proposal will be directed to and reviewed by the Academic Programs and Initiatives Committee before final approval. Please review the Handbook for Revising or Proposing New Programs for next steps beyond IST, including:

Step 5: Launching Your Program

Once your innovation receives final approval, you’re ready to launch your program. You will likely continue working with specific IST team members, depending on the particular needs of your innovation. Below is a checklist of common "to-do" items for new programs:

  • Create a contract agreement or registration process for participants
  • Reserve space(s) for your event
  • Submit a clock hours proposal
  • Write and get approved staff position descriptions
  • Establish an online presence on the College Website
  • Meet with the College marketing team to advertise your program
